General characterization:

The municipality has a territorial extension of 119.7 km2 and a population of 12416 inhabitants, for a population density of 103.7 inhabitants per square kilometers. Of these, 6235 are male (50.2%) and 6181 are female (49.8%). Life expectancy at birth is 77 years for both sexes.

Within the fundamental characteristics of the population structure we find that those under 17 years of age represent 21.1% and those 60 years of age and older represent 18.3%. Within this age group, those 80 years of age and older represent 1.5%.

By place of residence, 10,634 inhabitants live in urban areas (86%) and 1,731 in rural areas (14.0%).

There is a network of institutions, among which the following stand out: 1 Polyclinic with Hospitalization Service, with 12 Family Doctor and Nurse Offices, 1 Stomatology Department, 1 Department of Integral Rehabilitation, 1 Grandparents' Home, 1 Municipal Unit of Hygiene and Epidemiology.

The Cuban Health System is a dynamic structure in constant transformation to respond to the social task of developing quality, efficient and sustainable public health. Within the framework of the updating of the Cuban economic and social model and its transcendence for the National Public Health System, a set of policies, strategies and actions, called ''Process of Necessary Transformations'' has been implemented since 2010, which implies the reorganization, compacting and assisted regionalization of health services.

Human resources, a fundamental factor for the fulfillment of the mission of the Health System in the territory, responds to the needs of the population, to scientific and technical development and to the constant raising of the health level of the population. Before 1959 there were only 7 health professionals and technicians, in 2018 we have 400, a figure that increased discreetly by 22 workers, compared to 2017 due to the incorporation of doctors recently graduated from Medical Sciences in different health technologies.

In the last 6 years, 72 physicians have graduated in our municipality; 29 of them Bolivians and 43 Cubans, 43 Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, and 35 Bachelor's Degree in Health Technologies.

Hygiene and Epidemiology:

This center directs, implements and evaluates programs of control, surveillance, epidemiology, environmental, state sanitary inspection, non-communicable diseases, promotion and education for health with projections in the field of scientific and technical research, teaching and sanitary standardization in function of continuously improving the quality of life.

Services provided:

Health promotion and disease prevention.
Control and prevention of vector-borne diseases.
Prevention of animal diseases transmitted to humans (Zoonosis).
Attention to patients with HIV-AIDS.
Control of communicable and non-communicable diseases.
Epidemiological surveillance of food, water, as well as solid and liquid waste from all workplaces, educational centers and self-employed workers.
State sanitary inspection and control.
Counseling Service where psychological support is provided, guidance and information is given and healthy lifestyles are promoted.

SIUM:

Services provided:

Emergency and urgency service.
Oxygen therapy for terminally ill patients.
Attention to the population.
Commission of special medical diets.
Attention to hemodialysis-dependent patients in need of the cab system.

Specialty Consultations:

Dermatology offers its consultations at the René Ramos Latourt polyclinic on the 1st Wednesday and 4th Thursday of each month.
Obstetrics offers its consultations at the René Ramos Latourt polyclinic daily from 8 am to 4 pm.
Orthopedics offers its consultations at the René Ramos Latourt polyclinic.
The 24-hour on-call service is maintained in the municipal intensivist area; in the René Ramos Latourt polyclinic, where a specialist with a diploma in Intensive Care Therapy works from 8 am to 5 pm, and at night is attended by the chief specialist of the medical guard, with the accompaniment of the specialist in Internal Medicine in both areas.
The Rehabilitation Room service is maintained with extended hours until 7 pm.

Main results of science, innovation, technology and research:

The organization of the Science and Technological Innovation System in the municipality was perfected by enhancing the work in its different subsystems, which favored the production, introduction and generalization of scientific and technological results, with the consequent impact on the quality of life of the population, on health indicators and on the quality of services.
Programs, projects and other science, technology and innovation activities were guaranteed to be in line with the sector's priorities.
The economic assurance that sustains the activity of Science and Technological Innovation in the municipality was guaranteed.
The activities leading to the improvement of the Health Science and Technological Innovation System were strengthened with the participation of ANIR, BTJ and the Scientific Societies.
The work system of the Standardization and Metrology Group was implemented.
